Rocky

Rocky

Rocky was hit by a truck on the highway in 2012 and was left in the hot sun for over two days. When Rocky was finally rescued, he needed both hind legs amputated and he had severe burns from the hot asphalt.

Like other disabled dogs, Rocky took his injuries in stride and carried on with normal dog activities, adjusting to life at the sanctuary. He managed to get up and down the long flight of stairs on his own and taught himself a fairly acrobatic style of peeing. He was the very first dog to get his own bed in the early days of the sanctuary. There were a couple of different attempts to get him to use a doggy wheelchair, but Rocky resisted and preferred to walk on his two front legs.

Rocky quickly became the mascot of our sanctuary. As a disabled pit bull, Rocky had two strikes against him when it came to being adopted. As the years went by and he became an older dog, two strikes became three. It seemed likely that Rocky would spend the rest of his life in his favorite spot near the top of the sanctuary stairs.

But then a family from Alberta visited the sanctuary and fell in love with Rocky. On returning home, they kept thinking about the big-hearted, two-legged pit bull they met in Mazatlan. Finally they contacted us and we began to talk about the possibility of getting Rocky to Canada. It took some time to figure out the logistics, but we came up with a plan to transport Rocky to Canada

In the end, Rocky went on a big road trip and, despite Lupita's reservations, he loved every minute of it! He's now very much at home with his forever family in Alberta. Rocky still resists every attempt to train him to use his custom-built wheelchair and continues to do things his way.
