Seven small dogs were left behind in a rental home when their owner moved out. The dogs were locked in the house for over a month during the hottest part of the year, with no access to food, water, ventilation or sanitation. Neighbours broke a window and kept the dogs alive by tossing in food and water.
By the time the situation was reported to us, the dogs were in dire need of rescue.
It took a couple of days of negotiating with the landlord to get access to the house. The house was a horrific, smelly mess. The dogs were filthy and all of them very unwell.
All seven were taken directly to a veterinarian where they were put on IV therapy for dehydration. Sadly, the weakest of the group passed away the following day, despite every attempt to save her. Cerillo and Luz, the two weakest of the six dogs were unable to stand or lift their heads. For the first few days we held our breath hoping they would survive.
The monumental task of grooming all six dogs took several days.
All six surviving dogs boarded at the vet clinic for several weeks in order to receive intensive care. Each dog was moved to a foster home when it was ready.
Since the rescues took place in the early fall, the dogs became healthy enough for adoption during our high winter adoption season. All six were adopted to homes in Canada and the USA.
